British Council vs IDP — which should you choose?

Both providers deliver the same official IELTS test — the exam paper, scoring, and Test Report Form are identical. Your choice should be based on practical factors only.

Recommendation

If you need a test date within 2–3 weeks, check IDP first — they tend to have more computer-delivered slots. If you have a preferred city or centre, check both providers and pick whichever has a slot that works for your timeline.

How to book through British Council — step by step

1

Go to takeielts.britishcouncil.org

Click 'Register for IELTS' and select India as your country. You'll be asked to create an account or log in.

2

Choose your test type

Select Academic or General Training. Then choose between Paper-based or Computer-delivered (CDT). CDT results arrive in 3–5 days; paper-based results take 13 days.

3

Select a test centre and date

British Council has centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and more. Pick the closest and check available dates.

4

Complete your personal details

Enter your name exactly as it appears on the passport you will bring to the test. Any mismatch will invalidate your result.

How to book through IDP — step by step

1

Go to ielts.idp.com

Click 'Book a test' and select India. Create an IDP account if you don't already have one.

2

Choose Academic or General Training

IDP offers both paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS. Select the version relevant to your goal (see below if unsure).

3

Select city, centre, and date

IDP centres cover all major Indian cities. Computer-delivered tests often have more available dates — useful if your test window is tight.

4

Upload your passport photo page

IDP requires a scanned copy of your valid passport at registration. Ensure the photo and personal details page is clearly legible.

5

Pay and confirm

IDP accepts card and selected bank transfer options. You'll receive a booking reference number — note this down for any amendments.

Documents to bring on test day

Valid passport

Must be valid on the date of the test. The name on the booking must match exactly — including middle names if entered.

Booking confirmation

Email or printout from BC or IDP. Examiners check this against the attendance register.

Passport photo (IDP only)

Uploaded digitally during registration. British Council does not require a separate photo upload.

No calculators, phones, or notes

All electronic devices must be left outside the test room. Lockers are provided at most centres.

Important

Your name on the booking must match your passport exactly — including middle names if entered. A mismatch will result in refusal of entry with no refund. Double-check your entry before paying.

Academic or General Training — which do you need?

Choose IELTS Academic if you need it for:

  • University admission (UG or PG) — any country
  • NMC registration (nurses — UK)
  • GMC / HCPC / GPhC registration (UK professionals)
  • Australia skilled migration 189/190
  • AHPRA nursing registration (Australia)
  • Canada Express Entry — either version accepted

Choose IELTS General Training if you need it for:

  • UK Skilled Worker visa (UKVI IELTS — GT version)
  • UK Spouse / Family visa (UKVI IELTS — A1/A2/B1)
  • Canada immigration (Express Entry accepts both)
  • Australia Employer Sponsored visa
  • Work visa routes in New Zealand, Ireland
  • ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) — UK

If in doubt: always check the official requirements of the institution, employer, or visa authority — not a third-party website. Requirements change. The safest source is the official organisation (UKVI, NMC, university admissions office).

Not ready to book yet? What to do first

Booking before you're ready is expensive — exam fees are non-refundable if you miss your target band. Here's a sensible sequence:

1

Take a diagnostic mock test

Establishes your current band across all four skills. Listening and Reading practice tests on this site are free — take them timed and score yourself honestly.

2

Identify your target band and gap

Most institutions require 6.5–7.5. Calculate the gap between your current performance and your target. A 1.0 band improvement typically takes 4–12 weeks of focused preparation.

3

Prepare — then book

Once your mock tests are consistently hitting your target band, book the exam. Working backwards from a course or application deadline, allow 6–8 weeks for preparation plus the result waiting time.

Prepare with a coach before you book

A structured online course ensures you hit your target band on the first attempt — saving the cost of a repeat sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IELTS exam fee in India is approximately ₹17,000 for both British Council and IDP. Fees are reviewed periodically — check the official BC or IDP India websites for the current price before booking. Computer-delivered and paper-based tests cost the same.

Both providers deliver the same official IELTS test, set by Cambridge Assessment English. There is no difference in scoring, marking, or the certificate produced. The main practical differences are: test centre locations, available dates (IDP often has more CDT slots), and website experience for booking.

Book at least 4–6 weeks in advance, especially for popular cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru where slots fill quickly. Computer-delivered tests have more dates available — if you need a test within 2–3 weeks, CDT is usually the only option.

Yes, but policies differ. British Council allows rescheduling up to 5 weeks before the test without a full fee loss — you pay a transfer fee of approximately ₹3,000. Cancellation within 5 weeks results in a partial or full fee forfeit. IDP has similar policies. Always check the specific terms when you book.

The content, difficulty, and scoring are identical. The difference is format: paper-based means you write by hand on an answer sheet and receive results in 13 days. Computer-delivered means you type your answers on a screen (Speaking is still face-to-face with an examiner) and results arrive in 3–5 days. Many candidates find CDT easier for Writing as typing is faster than handwriting.

Canada Express Entry uses the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). IELTS Academic and General Training are both accepted for immigration — General Training is the more common choice. For CLB 9, you typically need 7.0 in each skill. For university admission in Canada, you need Academic.

You must bring the same valid passport you registered with. No other ID is accepted — not an Aadhar card, PAN card, driving licence, or any other document. If your passport has expired or the name differs from your booking, you will be refused entry and will forfeit your fee.

No. Computer-delivered results are released 3–5 days after the test; paper-based results take 13 days. The result is visible online first — the physical Test Report Form (TRF) is dispatched separately and usually arrives within 2–3 weeks.

There is no official limit on how many times you can take IELTS. However, most institutions will want to see your most recent result. You can retake IELTS as frequently as you like — some candidates take it once a month when slots are available. There is no waiting period between attempts.

Take a diagnostic mock test to establish your current band. Then work with a study plan that targets your weakest skill. Most candidates need 4–12 weeks of focused preparation to improve by one full band. The preparation course at IELTS Training Camp is structured around a target band and exam date, so you can lock in a date once your mock tests are consistently hitting your goal band.
