How to Build Your IELTS Vocabulary Effectively

1

Learn in context

Never memorise isolated words. Always learn them in a full sentence so you understand usage, not just definition.

2

Focus on collocations

IELTS examiners award marks for natural word combinations. Learn 'mitigate risks', not just 'mitigate'.

3

Spaced repetition

Review new words after 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, and 1 month. This moves vocabulary into long-term memory.

4

Use it immediately

Write a practice sentence using every new word within 24 hours. Production reinforces retention.

5

Topic-based learning

Organise vocabulary by IELTS topics. Knowing 20 strong words for 'Environment' beats knowing 200 random words.

6

Read authentic English

The Economist, BBC News, and The Guardian use high-level vocabulary in context — perfect IELTS preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Research suggests Band 7 IELTS candidates typically have an active vocabulary of around 7,000–8,000 words and a recognition vocabulary of 15,000+. However, knowing high-frequency academic vocabulary (AWL words) and topic-specific vocabulary for common IELTS topics is more important than raw word count.

The most common IELTS Writing Task 2 topics include: Education, Technology and Innovation, Environment and Climate Change, Health and Lifestyle, Crime and Justice, Globalisation, Work and Economy, and Media and Communication. Preparing vocabulary for these topics will cover the vast majority of essay prompts.

The most effective methods are: (1) learn words in context with example sentences, (2) focus on collocations (words that naturally go together), (3) review vocabulary within 24 hours using spaced repetition, (4) use new words in your writing and speaking practice immediately, (5) keep a vocabulary notebook organised by topic.

Use vocabulary that you are confident with. Examiners penalise inappropriate or incorrect use of complex words far more than simple but accurate language. Aim to use a range of vocabulary accurately — include some Band 7–8 words in appropriate contexts, but never sacrifice accuracy for complexity.
