IELTS Listening Section 4 Tips

Section 4 often feels like the hardest part of IELTS Listening because the pace is steady, the speaker keeps going, and there are no conversational repeats to rescue you.

Why is IELTS Listening Section 4 so difficult?

Section 4 is difficult because it is usually a continuous academic-style monologue with fewer natural pauses and more dense information. Students often miss answers because they stop following the structure after one unfamiliar word or one missed gap.

How to handle Section 4 better

  • Read the gaps first and predict the type of answer needed
  • Follow the speaker’s signposting language closely
  • Do not freeze after missing one answer
  • Train with note-taking only after you understand the structure
