UK Visa English Guide

IELTS B1 vs B2 for UK Visa — Which Test Do You Need?

Different UK visa routes require different IELTS tests and different CEFR levels. The Skilled Worker visa needs UKVI IELTS at B1. The Student visa needs UKVI IELTS at B2. The spouse visa needs IELTS Life Skills A1. ILR needs Life Skills B1. Choosing the wrong test — even if your English is strong — will lead to a rejected visa application. This guide tells you exactly which test each visa requires.

Do I need B1 or B2 IELTS for a UK visa?

It depends on your visa type. The UK Skilled Worker visa requires B1 level using IELTS for UKVI (a SELT test). The Student visa requires B2 level, also with IELTS for UKVI Academic. For ILR and settlement, you need IELTS Life Skills B1 — which tests only Speaking and Listening. For a spouse or family visa entry clearance, you need IELTS Life Skills A1. Standard IELTS (non-UKVI) is not accepted for any UK visa application.

Quick Facts

  • Skilled Worker Visa:B1 — IELTS for UKVI(Home Office)
  • Student Visa:B2 — IELTS for UKVI Academic(Home Office)
  • ILR / Settlement:B1 — IELTS Life Skills B1(Home Office)

What is the difference between B1 and B2 for UK visas?

B1 and B2 are levels on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The UK Home Office uses CEFR levels to set English language requirements for different visa routes. The level required depends entirely on which visa you are applying for — not on how good your English is generally.

Critical: IELTS Life Skills is NOT the same test as IELTS Academic or General Training

IELTS Life Skills (A1, A2, B1) tests only Speaking and Listening. It is a completely different product from IELTS Academic or General Training. If your visa requires B1 Life Skills and you book General Training IELTS, your result will not be accepted by the Home Office.

UKVI IELTS vs standard IELTS — what is the difference?

UKVI IELTS and standard IELTS use identical question papers and are marked by the same examiners. The difference is entirely administrative: UKVI IELTS must be taken at a Home Office-approved test centre that meets enhanced security and identity verification standards.

IELTS Life Skills — what is it and who needs it?

IELTS Life Skills is a speaking and listening only test used specifically for UK visa and immigration purposes. It is available at three CEFR levels: A1, A2, and B1.

IELTS Life Skills A1

Used for

UK family visa — initial entry clearance (spouse/partner visa, first application)

Format

Speaking and Listening — approximately 16 minutes with an examiner

Result

Pass or Fail result (no band score)

Notes

Required if your partner holds certain UK immigration statuses. Not required for EEA nationals in some circumstances.

IELTS Life Skills A2

Used for

Some UK family visa extensions and specific leave to remain routes

Format

Speaking and Listening — approximately 22 minutes

Result

Pass or Fail result

Notes

Check the specific visa category — A2 is less commonly required than A1 or B1.

IELTS Life Skills B1

Used for

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), naturalisation, some Skilled Worker extension routes

Format

Speaking and Listening — approximately 22 minutes

Result

Pass or Fail result

Notes

The most common Life Skills test. If you are applying for ILR or citizenship, you almost certainly need B1 Life Skills (not a standard IELTS Academic/GT test).

What IELTS score do you need for a UK visa in 2026?

Unlike nursing registration, the UK visa system does not use IELTS band scores directly — it maps to CEFR levels. Here is how band scores translate for the most common UK visa routes:

Visa RouteCEFR LevelTest RequiredApprox. IELTS BandAll 4 Skills?
Skilled Worker VisaB1IELTS for UKVI4.0+ per skill (minimum)Yes
Student VisaB2IELTS for UKVI Academic5.5–6.5 (institution sets)Yes

The band score shown is the visa minimum only. Professional registration bodies (NMC, GMC, HCPC) set much higher requirements — typically Band 7.0 per skill.

Frequently Asked Questions

The UK Skilled Worker visa requires B1 level on the CEFR, which corresponds to approximately IELTS 4.0 per skill. However, you must take IELTS for UKVI (a Secure English Language Test) — standard IELTS is not accepted for UK visa applications. If you are also registering with a professional body like NMC or GMC, that body will require a much higher score (usually 7.0 per skill).

IELTS Life Skills tests only Speaking and Listening and is used exclusively for UK visa purposes (family visas, ILR, naturalisation). IELTS Academic tests all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and is used for university admissions and professional registration. They are entirely separate products — scoring well in one does not substitute for the other.

Yes — most UK spouse and family visa applicants need to demonstrate English at A1 level using IELTS Life Skills A1 for the initial entry clearance application. If extending or applying for ILR, B1 Life Skills is usually required. Some nationalities and routes are exempt — check the UK Visas and Immigration guidance for your specific circumstances.

No. Standard IELTS (taken at a non-UKVI approved centre) is not accepted as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK visa applications. You must take IELTS for UKVI at a Home Office-approved test centre. The test content is identical — only the centre approval status differs.

ILR typically requires B1 level in Speaking and Listening only, demonstrated through IELTS Life Skills B1. This is a Pass/Fail test — there is no band score. You do not need to demonstrate Reading or Writing skills for ILR through the Life Skills route.

The question papers, marking, and scoring are identical. The only difference is that IELTS for UKVI must be taken at a Home Office-approved test centre that meets enhanced security standards. IELTS for UKVI is accepted everywhere standard IELTS is accepted, so if you need IELTS for both a UK visa and for professional registration, book IELTS for UKVI to cover both requirements with one sitting.

Nurses applying for a UK Health and Care Worker visa need IELTS for UKVI Academic. This covers the visa requirement (B1 minimum) and satisfies NMC's requirement (7.0 in each skill) in a single sitting — as long as you achieve the 7.0 NMC standard. Booking standard IELTS Academic will satisfy NMC but not the visa. Book IELTS for UKVI to cover both.
