CRS Score Calculator Guide (2026): How Your IELTS Score Changes Your Points

Your CRS score ranks you in the Express Entry pool out of 1,200 points: up to 500 for core factors such as age, education and language, 40 for a spouse, 100 for skill transferability and 600 for additional factors such as a provincial nomination. For most IELTS learners, language is the factor they can still change: moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four skills adds 56 points to the language score alone for a single applicant.

What is the CRS score?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is how IRCC ranks Express Entry profiles. Each profile gets points for core human capital, a spouse's factors, skill transferability and additional factors, up to 1,200. IRCC invites the highest-ranked candidates in each draw, so the cut-off changes from round to round and extra points never guarantee an invitation.

How many CRS points is your IELTS score worth?

IRCC converts your IELTS General Training result to CLB levels and then gives points for each of the four skills. A single applicant at CLB 9 in a skill gets 31 points for it, at CLB 7 only 17. Language also feeds skill transferability, so the real gain from a higher IELTS score is larger than the language table alone shows.

First official language: CRS points per skill (canada.ca) and the IELTS General Training scores for each CLB (IRCC)
CLB levelIELTS GT needed (Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking)Points per skill, singlePoints per skill, with spouse
CLB 108.5 / 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.53432
CLB 98.0 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 7.03129
CLB 87.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.52322
CLB 76.0 / 6.0 / 6.0 / 6.01716
CLB 65.5 / 5.0 / 5.5 / 5.598
CLB 4 or 54.5 to 5.0 / 3.5 to 4.0 / 4.0 to 5.0 / 4.0 to 5.066

Worked example: the points a higher IELTS score adds

A single applicant with IELTS 6.0 in every skill is CLB 7 and gets 17 points per skill: 68 points. With Listening 8.0 and Reading, Writing and Speaking 7.0, they reach CLB 9 in all four and get 31 per skill: 124 points. That is 56 more points from language alone, before any increase in skill transferability. Listening needs the biggest jump, because CLB 9 asks for 8.0 in Listening but 7.0 in the other skills.

What changes on 3 November 2026?

From 3 November 2026 IRCC gives new points for a qualifying job offer or for Canadian work experience in a high-wage occupation, whichever gives more: 100, 70 or 50 for a job offer, 70, 40 or 20 for experience, up to 150 points (140 with a spouse). A job offer no longer needs an LMIA. Draws pause for up to two weeks while profiles are recalculated.

  • Job offer route: an offer in a high-wage occupation earns 100, 70 or 50 points depending on the wage level; other occupations earn 0.
  • Canadian experience route: at least 12 months in a high-wage occupation earns 70, 40 or 20 points, on top of the existing points for Canadian work experience.
  • Not combined: you get whichever route gives more, capped at 150 points (140 with a spouse).
  • No LMIA needed for a qualifying job offer from 3 November 2026.
  • Action before 3 November: IRCC asks candidates with a qualifying offer to add it to their profile before that date.

How to improve your CRS score

The changes most applicants can make are a higher language score, a second official language (French adds 25 or 50 points), more Canadian education or experience, and a provincial nomination, which adds 600 points. Of these, a higher IELTS score is usually the fastest: a few months of preparation can move several skills up a CLB level.

  1. Retake IELTS General Training with a plan for the skill furthest from CLB 9, usually Listening (8.0 needed; see our Listening practice test) or Writing (7.0 needed).
  2. Check skill transferability: higher language scores combined with education or foreign work experience add more points.
  3. Consider French: CLB 7 or higher in French adds 25 or 50 additional points.
  4. Look at provincial nominee programmes for your occupation and province.

Frequently asked questions

This page explains the CRS points and shows how your IELTS score changes them. For your full score, use IRCC's official CRS tool on canada.ca, then use our IELTS to CLB calculator for the language part.

There is no fixed pass mark. IRCC invites the highest-ranked candidates in each draw, and the cut-off changes from round to round and by draw category.

IELTS General Training. IRCC does not accept IELTS Academic or the IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. CELPIP-General and PTE Core are the other accepted English tests.

IELTS General Training 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking is CLB 9 for those skills, but 7.0 in Listening is only CLB 7, because CLB 8 Listening needs 7.5 and CLB 9 needs 8.0. For a single applicant that is 31 + 31 + 31 + 17 = 110 first-language points.

Not under the current CRS tables. From 3 November 2026 a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation earns 100, 70 or 50 points, without an LMIA.

Results must be less than 2 years old when you apply for permanent residence.
