IELTS for Doctors GMC PLAB

For doctors, this is not just a broad UK visa question. The GMC uses its own English evidence rules, and the safest route depends on whether you are planning PLAB, later registration, or both.

What English test do doctors need for GMC or PLAB?

As of May 13, 2026, the GMC accepts IELTS Academic and OET Medicine for doctors using this route. IELTS needs at least 7.0 in each skill and 7.5 overall in the same test, while OET needs at least grade B in all four skills. The GMC also says IELTS Online and IELTS One Skill Retake can be accepted under its rules.

What matters most in the GMC English route?

These are the rules that usually decide whether a doctor's test result is usable or not.

IELTS route for doctors

Key point: IELTS Academic only, including UKVI if you choose that version

The GMC says it accepts the Academic version of IELTS, including UKVI, as long as you meet its minimum scores.

OET route for doctors

Key point: OET Medicine only

The GMC says you must take the Medicine version of OET and achieve at least grade B in each testing area.

IELTS score target

Key point: At least 7.0 in each skill and 7.5 overall

For doctors, the GMC requires all four IELTS skills plus the overall score to meet the minimum in the same test.

Validity timing

Key point: Two years, but the relevant deadline changes by stage

For PLAB 1 the certificate must be valid on the day you sit the exam. For registration it must be valid when the GMC approves your application.

Where do doctors get confused in this route?

These repeated misunderstandings create the most avoidable rebooking and timing problems.

GMC acceptance is not the same as UK visa acceptance

A test that works for the GMC does not automatically solve a UKVI visa requirement. The GMC itself tells users to check visa rules separately with UK Visas and Immigration.

GMC accepts more IELTS delivery options than many users expect

For doctors, the GMC says it accepts IELTS taken in person, IELTS Online, and IELTS One Skill Retake where the underlying conditions are met.

PLAB timing and registration timing are not identical

A certificate that is valid for booking or sitting PLAB 1 can still become a problem later if it expires before the GMC approves registration.

What mistakes should doctors avoid?

These are the practical errors that cost the most time and money.

Booking IELTS General Training instead of IELTS Academic for the GMC route

Assuming UKVI is compulsory for GMC purposes when the issue is really the Academic version and the score level

Thinking a GMC-accepted test automatically covers UK visa requirements too

Checking only the overall IELTS score and ignoring the 7-in-each-skill rule

Letting a valid result expire between PLAB planning and final registration timing

IELTS for Doctors GMC PLAB FAQs

Short answers to the most common doctor-registration English questions.

As of May 13, 2026, the GMC says doctors using IELTS need the Academic version and must score at least 7.0 in each skill with an overall score of at least 7.5 in the same test.

Yes. The GMC also accepts OET, but it must be the Medicine version and it must show at least grade B in each testing area in the same test.

Yes. The GMC says it accepts IELTS taken in person, IELTS Online, and IELTS One Skill Retake as long as its score and evidence rules are met.

Yes. The GMC says it accepts One Skill Retake where one section of the full test missed the minimum and the retake fixes that section. It also says the original full test must have been IELTS on computer and the retake must be completed within 60 days.

For the GMC route, the accepted IELTS route is Academic, not General Training.

Not necessarily. The GMC says it accepts IELTS Academic including UKVI, but the key GMC issue is the accepted Academic version and the score level. UK visa rules are a separate question and should be checked separately with UKVI.

The GMC says both IELTS and OET certificates are valid for 2 years. For PLAB 1 the result must be valid on the exam day, and for registration it must be valid when the GMC approves the application.

Sometimes extra evidence may help if the certificate is older than 2 years, but the GMC rules are stage-specific and not automatic. You should use the current GMC guidance for doctors rather than assuming an older result will still work.
