IELTS vs OET for Nurses
For NMC planning, this is not really about which test is more famous. It is about which accepted route gives you the safer path to the exact scores you need.
Should nurses choose IELTS or OET?
As of May 13, 2026, the NMC accepts both IELTS Academic and OET for this route. IELTS requires 7 in listening, reading, and speaking and 6.5 in writing, while OET requires grade B in listening, reading, and speaking and grade C+ in writing. The better choice is usually the one whose task style and score pattern you can hit more safely.

IELTS vs OET for nurses at a glance
This is the fastest way to compare the two accepted NMC routes.
Accepted by NMC
IELTS Academic only
OET Nursing only
Why it matters: NMC does not accept IELTS General Training for this route.
Required pass pattern
7 in listening, reading, speaking and 6.5 in writing
B in listening, reading, speaking and C+ in writing
Why it matters: The score pattern is different, so compare the shape of the target, not just the brand name.
Test context
Academic English
Healthcare and nursing communication
Why it matters: OET can feel more job-specific for nurses, while IELTS is broader and more academic.
Combining two sittings
Allowed if NMC IELTS rules are met
Allowed if NMC OET rules are met
Why it matters: In both routes, NMC still requires minimum floors in both sittings.
Remote / online option
IELTS Online is not accepted by NMC
OET@Home is accepted by NMC
Why it matters: This is one of the clearest practical differences between the two routes.
Single-skill retake logic
IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted by NMC
No equivalent NMC shortcut; use full OET rules
Why it matters: If you narrowly miss one area, do not assume the quickest-looking retake route is valid.
When does IELTS make more sense, and when does OET make more sense?
Neither route is automatically better. The safer route depends on fit.
IELTS may suit you better if
you are already comfortable with standard IELTS preparation, you may use the score outside nurse registration, or you prefer a more familiar academic-test format.
OET may suit you better if
you prefer healthcare-focused language tasks and want your test context to feel closer to nursing communication rather than broad academic English.
Neither route should be chosen blindly
because the cheaper, faster, or more popular option is not always the safer one for your actual score profile, deadlines, and retake risk.
Mistakes nurses make when comparing IELTS and OET
These are the comparison errors that usually cost time, money, or both.
Comparing IELTS Academic with OET and accidentally booking IELTS General Training instead
Assuming IELTS Online, IELTS Indicator, or IELTS One Skill Retake will still work for NMC
Remembering only the overall idea of the scores and forgetting the exact writing requirement
Comparing brand familiarity instead of comparing the task style that suits you better
Ignoring NMC score-combining rules until after a second test has already been booked
