How children should be prepared for adult life is a subject of ongoing debate. Proponents of competition argue that instilling a drive to excel equips children for the demands of modern society, while advocates of cooperation believe that the ability to collaborate produces greater long-term benefits. In my view, both qualities are necessary, though cooperation deserves greater emphasis in early education.
Those who favour a competitive approach argue that contemporary professional environments reward initiative, performance, and the willingness to outperform peers. Children raised with a competitive mindset develop resilience, self-motivation, and an understanding that effort yields reward. These traits are difficult to cultivate later in life and can provide a decisive advantage in careers characterised by individual performance metrics and achievement targets.
