Should you book IELTS with IDP or the British Council?

Book with whichever official partner still operates in your country. In India, that is IDP only — the British Council sold its India IELTS business in 2021. The paper is the same IELTS test, scored on the same 0–9 bands, whether you sit it on computer or paper. Choose the date and format you can actually get, then prepare for the test itself.

IDP vs British Council IELTS price: which should you choose?

There is no easier provider. IDP and the British Council deliver the same IELTS product: Academic, General Training, UKVI, and Life Skills where offered. Scoring, question types, and the Test Report Form are not branded versions of the exam.

For Canada PR from India, book IELTS General Training (or CELPIP) with IDP on a date you can actually sit. The partner name does not change CLB conversion. For a UK visa that asks for a SELT, book IELTS for UKVI — still via IDP in India — and confirm the test appears on the GOV.UK SELT list.

For university admission, check the institution’s accepted tests, then book Academic. For nurses (NMC, AHPRA), the professional body names the test, not IDP vs British Council. If you are not ready to pay the fee, sit a timed IELTS mock test first.
