IELTS One Skill Retake in India: How It Works and Which Test Centres Offer It

IELTS One Skill Retake, often called OSR, lets eligible candidates in India retake just one skill instead of repeating the full exam. This guide explains eligibility, fees, centre availability, UKVI acceptance, and the situations where OSR is the right move and where it is not.

What is IELTS One Skill Retake in India?

IELTS One Skill Retake in India is an option for eligible IELTS on Computer candidates to retake one skill only: Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking, within 60 days of their original test. IDP IELTS India currently lists the fee at INR 12,650 and says OSR is available across all cities in India, but your original full test still needs to be at a centre that offers OSR and you must confirm that your target university, regulator, or visa route accepts it.

IELTS OSR Quick Facts for India

  • Eligible test type:IELTS on Computer only(IELTS.org and IDP IELTS India)
  • Retake window:Book and sit OSR within 60 days of the original test(IELTS.org and IDP IELTS India)
  • How many skills you can retake:One skill only, once per original full IELTS test(IELTS.org)
  • India fee:INR 12,650(IDP IELTS India)
  • India availability:IDP says OSR is available in all cities across India(IDP IELTS India)
  • Results timeline:Typically 2 to 5 days(IELTS.org and IDP IELTS India)
  • UKVI status:Accepted for IELTS Academic and General Training on computer in selected locations(IELTS.org)
  • Canada Express Entry:Not accepted(IRCC)

This guide is written for Indian test takers who want a practical answer, not vague marketing copy. The most important rule is simple: do not book OSR just because it sounds cheaper. Book it only when one skill missed the target, your original test was eligible, and the organisation you are applying to accepts One Skill Retake.

How does IELTS One Skill Retake actually work?

OSR is not a shortcut around IELTS rules. It is a structured post-results option built for candidates who were strong in three skills but fell short in one.

1. Original Test

Start with an eligible IELTS on Computer booking. This is the rule that decides whether OSR is even possible later.

2. Get Your Result

Once your four-skill score arrives, check whether only one skill missed the target and whether the gap is realistic to close quickly.

3. Retake One Skill

Book the specific skill from your candidate portal and retake only that one section instead of paying for a full new test.

4. Receive New TRF

You receive a fresh TRF with the retaken skill updated and the other three original scores carried forward.

💡 Expert Tip

If you are planning around a deadline, think backwards from the university or visa submission date. OSR still needs time for booking, the test day itself, and result release, so last-minute decision-making can erase the advantage.

Who can book IELTS One Skill Retake in India?

The official IELTS and IDP India rules are stricter than many students expect. OSR is only open to a specific set of candidates.

You are eligible only if all of these are true

You already completed a full IELTS on Computer test.

That original full test was taken at a centre that offers IELTS One Skill Retake.

You have received your original result and know exactly which one skill needs improvement.

You will book and sit the retake within 60 days of the original test date.

Your university, regulator, employer, or visa route accepts One Skill Retake.

The biggest misunderstanding

Many candidates assume they can decide about OSR after any IELTS result. That is not how it works. Your original full test must already have been an eligible IELTS on Computer test at a centre that offers OSR.

This is why smart candidates think about OSR before booking the original test, not only after receiving a disappointing score.

Which test centres in India offer IELTS One Skill Retake?

This is the question most candidates really mean when they search for OSR. The short answer is broader than many people expect.

Which IELTS test centres offer OSR in India?

IDP IELTS India currently says that IELTS One Skill Retake is available in all cities across India. That means OSR is not limited to only one or two metros. However, you still need to take your original full IELTS on Computer test at a centre that offers OSR, and the safest way to verify live availability is through the official IELTS centre search or your candidate portal before you book.

What the official sources say

  • IDP IELTS India says OSR is available in all cities across India.
  • The global IELTS test-centre finder lets users filter by country, city, and a One Skill Retake toggle.
  • IELTS also says OSR is available only at centres where the feature is offered, so original-test eligibility still matters.

What can you retake under OSR?

You can retake one of the four core IELTS skills. The format and marking stay aligned with the corresponding skill in the full IELTS test.

Listening OSR

Useful when timing, concentration, or one bad section pulled your score down, while Reading, Writing, and Speaking already met the target.

Reading OSR

Suitable when your issue was speed, difficult passage management, or one question type rather than a broader English problem across the whole test.

Writing OSR

Often the most practical retake when you were close to the requirement and know that structure, task response, or time control caused the miss.

Speaking OSR

Best when nerves, hesitation, or an off-day affected performance even though your everyday speaking level is usually stronger.

How much does IELTS One Skill Retake cost in India?

The current India pricing is straightforward and easier to compare than many candidates assume.

OSR test typeFeeNotes
IELTS on Computer (OSR)INR 12,650India fee published by IDP IELTS India.
One Skill Retake for IELTS on Computer for UKVIINR 12,650The same India fee is listed for the UKVI computer OSR option.

OSR is cheaper than rebooking the full test, but price alone should not make the decision. If two skills are weak, a full retake may still be the better investment. You can compare full-test pricing in our IELTS exam fee in India guide.

How do you book IELTS One Skill Retake in India?

IDP IELTS India explains the booking path clearly: the retake is triggered from your candidate profile after your result is released.

1

Take an eligible original IELTS test

Your original test must be an IELTS on Computer booking taken at a centre that offers One Skill Retake.

2

Wait for your original result

After your four-skill result is released, decide whether only one skill needs improvement.

3

Log into the candidate portal

IDP IELTS India says you can click the Retake button against the skill you want to repeat.

4

Book and sit OSR within 60 days

You must complete the retake inside the 60-day window from your original test date.

5

Use the TRF that fits your goal

You receive a new TRF with the updated retaken skill, and you can use either the original or the new TRF depending on what the organisation accepts.

Should you choose OSR, EOR, or a full retake?

This is where strategy matters more than marketing. The right choice depends on why you missed the score and what your destination accepts.

Choose OSR

Use it when only one skill is below the requirement, the other three are already strong enough, and the organisation accepts OSR.

Choose EOR

Use it when you believe a score, especially Writing or Speaking, was marked lower than it should have been. IDP India also states EOR is permitted with OSR.

Choose a Full Retake

Use it when multiple skills are weak, the destination rejects OSR, or you need a new complete score profile for a different route or institution.

💡 Expert Tip

If your Writing or Speaking score feels unexpectedly low and you were otherwise confident, EOR may be worth considering before you commit extra time to a retake. But if the score genuinely reflects performance and only one skill needs improvement, OSR is usually the cleaner route.

Where is IELTS One Skill Retake accepted and where is it not?

Acceptance is where many blog posts become misleading. OSR is accepted by important destinations, but it is not universal.

United Kingdom

IELTS published on October 24, 2023 that UK Visas and Immigration approved One Skill Retake for use within SELT requirements. IELTS also says UKVI accepts OSR for IELTS Academic and General Training on computer in selected locations.

Australia

IDP IELTS India says OSR is accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, AHPRA, and more than 50 Australian universities and institutions. Even then, candidates should still verify the exact organisation.

New Zealand

IDP IELTS India states that Immigration New Zealand accepts One Skill Retake. This makes OSR relevant for many India-based test takers targeting New Zealand study, work, or migration routes.

Canada Express Entry

IRCC clearly says it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. If your plan is Canada PR through Express Entry, you should not rely on OSR.

The Canada point deserves repeating because it affects many Indian candidates: IRCC says Express Entry accepts IELTS General Training, but it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake. If your end goal is Canada PR through Express Entry, do not build your application timeline around OSR.

What mistakes do Indian test takers make with OSR?

These are the errors that usually waste the most time or money.

Booking a paper-based IELTS test and assuming OSR will still be available later.

Choosing OSR before checking whether the university, employer, regulator, or visa route actually accepts it.

Assuming OSR works for Canada Express Entry when IRCC says it does not.

Missing the 60-day booking and testing window after the original test.

Using OSR when two or more skills are weak and a full retake would be more practical.

Booking the original full test at a centre without confirming OSR support first.

Confusing OSR with EOR even though they solve different problems.

What should you do next if you are considering OSR?

Use this simple shortlist before you spend money.

Confirm your destination accepts One Skill Retake.

Check that your original full test was an eligible IELTS on Computer booking.

Decide whether one skill is the real problem or whether two or more skills need work.

Make sure the 60-day window still gives you enough time for your application deadline.

Compare OSR with EOR if the score was unexpectedly low.

Use targeted preparation for that one skill instead of generic full-test revision.
