IELTS Writing Task 2 Problem Solution Essay

Problem-solution essays reward logic more than decoration. If the problem is defined clearly and the solutions respond directly to it, the essay becomes much easier to organise. If that link is weak, even fluent writing can still feel unconvincing.

How should you write an IELTS Writing Task 2 problem-solution essay?

Define the problem clearly first, then choose realistic solutions that answer it directly. A strong problem-solution essay usually has a clear introduction, one body paragraph focused on the problem, one on the solutions, and a conclusion that reinforces the overall logic.

Quick Facts

  • Core skill:Problem-to-solution logic
  • Most common weak spot:Generic unrealistic solutions
  • Best improvement move:Link each solution to a clearly explained problem

This essay type becomes stronger when the logic is visible from the start

Many weak problem-solution essays contain reasonable ideas, but the chain between problem and solution is not clear enough.

Link the cause to the solution

Cause-and-solution essays become much stronger when the solution answers the real cause rather than sounding generic.

IELTS Task 2 prompt

Childhood obesity is becoming more common in many countries. What are the causes of this problem and what solutions can be suggested?

Step 1

Choose the strongest cause analysis

Step 2

Choose the best solution path

What structure works best?

  • Introduction that paraphrases the issue and signals a problem-solution response.
  • Problem paragraph that explains the most important issue clearly and realistically.
  • Solution paragraph that responds directly to that issue with practical measures.
  • Conclusion that reinforces the link between the issue and the proposed response.

What mistakes keep problem-solution essays weak?

Giving solutions that sound generic or unrealistic because they do not clearly answer the problem.

Explaining the problem too vaguely before moving to solutions.

Using the causes of a problem as if they were the same as the problem itself.

Forgetting to make the solution paragraph as developed as the problem paragraph.
