How IELTS Scoring Works

IELTS uses a 9-band scale — from Band 1 (Non-user) to Band 9 (Expert user) — to report results for each skill and as an overall score. Each band corresponds to a defined level of English competence.

Your overall band score is calculated by averaging your four skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and rounding to the nearest 0.5. For example: if you score L7.5 + R7.0 + W6.5 + S7.0 = 28.0 ÷ 4 = 7.0 overall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your four individual skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). The average is then rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example, if your scores are 7.5 + 6.5 + 7.0 + 7.0 = 28 ÷ 4 = 7.0 overall.

A 'good' IELTS score depends on your purpose. For UK Skilled Worker visa the minimum is B1 (IELTS 4.0 in each skill). Most UK universities require 6.0–7.0. For top universities and competitive programs, 7.5+ is often expected. For Canadian immigration via Express Entry, CLB 9 requires approximately IELTS 8.0.

Yes. IELTS uses a 1–9 scale that includes half band scores (e.g., 6.5, 7.0, 7.5). Listening and Reading produce exact scores through conversion tables. Writing and Speaking are assessed by examiners who can award any score from 1.0 to 9.0 in 0.5 increments.

To achieve Band 7.0 in IELTS Listening, you need to get 30–31 correct answers out of 40. For Band 7.5, you need 32–34 correct answers.

Yes. IELTS uses a unique 9-band scale from Band 1 (Non-user) to Band 9 (Expert user). Each skill is scored on this scale, and the overall band score is the average of all four rounded to the nearest 0.5.

This calculator uses the official IELTS raw score conversion tables published by the British Council and IDP. Listening and Reading scores are calculated precisely. For Writing and Speaking, enter your examiner-awarded band score directly.
