IELTS Requirement for New Zealand Work Visa
For most users, this really means one thing: the Accredited Employer Work Visa. The important detail is that IELTS is not required for every AEWV case. Your job skill level changes the rule.
What IELTS score is required for a New Zealand work visa?
As of May 9, 2026, Immigration New Zealand says an Accredited Employer Work Visa for an ANZSCO level 4 or 5 job can be supported with IELTS overall 4 or more. But not every AEWV applicant needs IELTS, because there are no English language requirements for AEWV jobs at ANZSCO level 1 to 3 or for some eligible National Occupation List roles.

Who actually needs IELTS for a New Zealand work visa?
This is where users often get misled by generic blogs. The AEWV English rule depends heavily on the job classification.
AEWV level 4 or 5 jobs
This is the core route where many applicants need to show English ability. If your job falls into this group, you need to understand the English rule before you book.
AEWV level 1 to 3 jobs
Immigration New Zealand says there are no English language requirements for AEWV applications for ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 jobs.
National Occupation List roles
Some jobs on the National Occupation List can also sit outside the usual AEWV English requirement. This is why job classification matters as much as the visa name.
Partners and dependent children
If you are eligible to support them under AEWV, Immigration New Zealand says there are no English language requirements for your partner and dependent children.
How can you meet the AEWV English requirement?
Immigration New Zealand says there are two broad routes: evidence from citizenship/work/study, or an approved English language test.
Main evidence routes
Through your English ability from citizenship, work, and study
By taking an accepted English language test such as IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, B2 First, or OET
Accepted test benchmarks for the AEWV
| Test | Minimum result |
|---|---|
| IELTS | Overall 4 or more |
| PTE Academic | Overall 29 or more |
| TOEFL iBT | Overall 31 or more |
| B2 First / B2 First for Schools | Overall 142 or more |
| OET | Grade D or higher in all 4 skills |
💡 Expert Tip
If you might later switch from a temporary work route to residence planning, do not assume the AEWV score is “good enough forever.” The AEWV benchmark is much lower than the common skilled residence threshold.
Can you avoid IELTS through citizenship or qualifications?
Sometimes yes. Immigration New Zealand outlines cases where citizenship history or recognised qualifications can satisfy AEWV English rules.
Citizenship route
You may be able to satisfy AEWV English rules through citizenship plus work or study history in recognised English-speaking countries listed by Immigration New Zealand.
Bachelor's degree route
A qualification comparable with a New Zealand level 7 bachelor's degree, gained in a recognised country with the required study history, may satisfy the rule.
Postgraduate qualification route
A recognised postgraduate qualification at level 8 or above, with the required study history, may also count as evidence.
Does the New Zealand work visa accept OSR?
Yes, and that makes this page especially useful for candidates who missed the target in only one skill.
Immigration New Zealand lists IELTS One Skill Retake among the approved English tests for the AEWV route. That means users who already have an eligible IELTS result and only need one skill improved may have more flexibility than they realise.

What mistakes do applicants make with the AEWV English rule?
Most wrong turns happen because users read a general work-visa article instead of the route-specific guidance.
Assuming every New Zealand work visa needs IELTS
Ignoring ANZSCO level and checking only the visa name
Using an at-home test result
Thinking partner and child English rules are always the same as the principal applicant's
Booking a test before checking whether citizenship or qualification evidence is enough
Assuming the work visa score will also be enough for later residence
